    1. Had you done any kayaking before joining the club?

I had done very little kayaking before uni, no whitewater at all but a bit of flatwater on trips with school etc so i wanted to give it a go here. Even though I hadn’t really paddled before that didnt put me off as during the freshers trips all my worries about being unable were put to rest as it doesnt matter how little you know you will soon learn and wont have to do anything you don’t feel comfortable with.

  • What is/was the best thing about the club?

The best thing about the club is the fun we have, the kayaking is brilliant and we have trips pretty much every week which are always a laugh and build your confidence every time. The social side of the club is evident all the time as we have a good time with each other whether its during the pool sessions or on a river, surfing or out making fools of ourselves whilst under the influence! The club is pretty much my second family! And we do have the best socials at Exeter!!

  • What made you sign up to the club?

I signed up because i wanted to get into a sport whilst at uni and after having gone on the freshers trip last year and met some of the members who were all really friendly and fun decided this was the club for me as i felt included even before i’d signed up

  • How much of a social scene is/was there?

The social scene is a major part of the club every week we do something together whether its going to Arena dressed in some stupid costume or just a “quiet” one in the Ram a week doesnt go by when you don’t meet up with the other club members, i think this is great as it also helps when going down rivers as the better you know each other the easier it is to have a good group dynamic and the better the trip will be and safer.

  • Will you be joining the club this year? Why/Why not?

Of course i’ll be joining the club this year!! My first year wouldn’t have been half as fun if it wasn’t for this club and i wouldn’t have got to build my confidence as much as i have without being pushed to paddle to my full potential and through that have enjoyed my summer holiday with the club in France. This is the best club in uni so my advice is to give it a go and if you enjoy it join!! It’l make the next 3/4 years so enjoyable!

  1. Had you done any kayaking before joining the club?

Yes, approximately for 5 years before joining- mainly flat water paddling with sporadic trips to relatively more exciting water ventures. I paddled with my London based club WBB (Westminster Boating Base)where I attained my BCU 3*

  2. What is/was the best thing about the club?

The social atmosphere, the familiar nature that the club somehow manages to induce on everyone at an alarmingly efficient speed. It’s actually quite annoying- you’d think 2 weeks with the same bloody people would make one sick of them, unfortunately not so; I can proudly say I have had EUCC withdrawal symptoms… fevers, convulsions, AIDS…. all the common ones

  3. What made you sign up to the club?

The fact I had kayaked beforehand.

  4. How much of a social scene is/was there?

It was virtually non-existent till i made my entrance- only joking it was very well established. The promises and arguable claims of the club being the most social club on the campus scene were met and completely justified. The best bit about it is that the social aspects of the club are constantly evolving and absorbing all the qualities of its members without at any point letting up of the quality of the nights out.

  5. Will you be joining the club this year? Why/Why not?

No, tax reasons. Only kidding, course I will be!

      1. Had you done any kayaking before joining the club?

No, but I’d always fancied trying it.

  6. What is/was the best thing about the club?

Everyone’s so friendly! I really have met some fantstic mates here, and we’re always excited to welcome new people and make the club bigger and better. It’s a club where you can progress at a pace your happy with, but can expect plenty of encouragement to try out new things.

  7. What made you sign up to the club?

I’d always fancied trying it but just assumed it would be far too expensive. One of the guys caught me taking a peek at the Canoe Club table at the Fresher’s Squash and showed me everything the club did. I couldn’t beleive how cheap it actually was.! It seemed like great fun and everyone seemed really friendly, so I came along to the first pool session and haven’t looked back since!

  8. How much of a social scene is/was there?

I can honestly say I’ve had some of the best nights of my life with this club. There’s always something going on with this club, from weekly socials, balls and trips away, to just spur of the moment get togethers. Infact there’s so much going on you can’t possibly keep up with it all! But thats the great thing with this club, you can come to as much or as little as you like, but can garentee you’ll have a fantastic time!

  9. Will you be joining the club this year? Why/Why not?

Need you ask! Of course. I’m actually writting this back home and its making me so excited about getting back to all the EUCC fun.

  11. What is/was the best thing about the club?

The lash, and how quickly the freshers progress into whitewater kings (and queens).

  12. What made you sign up to the club?

    It was inevitable.

  13. How much of a social scene is/was there?

The canoe club is very friendly and there are always things going on

    1. Had you done any kayaking before joining the club?

      Not an inch.

    2. What is/was the best thing about the club?

The atmosphere, friendliness, openness and the fun-loving people.

    3. What made you sign up to the club?

The freshers trip was fun and a group of us agreed that topless guys was a good start to uni life. There were pictures of kayaks doing things I never knew were even possible! And they had a kayak hanging from the ceiling, need i say more?

    4. How much of a social scene is/was there?

Its so social I never got any sleep!! Spontaneous camping, late night (3am) runs, early morning (4am) wanders, weekends away, weeks away, pubs, clubs, nudity, houses, pizza, pancakes…

      1. Had you done any kayaking before joining the club?

No. Never even considered it, but thought what the hell you only live once, and just hearing people talk about it made me want to, it’s addictive!!

  16. What is/was the best thing about the club?

The people, sounds cheesy but it’s true, everyone in the club rocks! They’re the nicest, friendliest bunch, all with the same attitude that life is for the living, and the best thing you can do is have fun!!

  17. What made you sign up to the club?

I signed up because in my first year two of my closest mates were members and everything they did made me jealous, they would always come back from trips, training, socials, anything to do with the club, buzzing and I thought, I want that from uni… and they got drunk a lot

  18. How much of a social scene is/was there?

As much as you want… it can be 24/7 if you want (which you will), whether it be hanging around with each other, going to the pub, having parties, going on day trips paddling or to the beach or anywhere, or even going for full on holidays with them! Oh and if your lazy and can’t be bothered to organise this the social sec does socials at least once a week so you don’t have to do anything!

  19. Will you be joining the club this year? Why/Why not?

Yes, although not officially, because I’ve graduated apparently I’m not allowed (bastards!) so I’ll be sneaking in all the time, so if you see me don’t be surprised (or scared)…

      1. Had you done any kayaking before joining the club?

No, I was a total beginner…my first time on the water was the Freshers trips and I could only paddle in circles.

  21. What is/was the best thing about the club?

The friends you make, the banter and the trips you go on! I’ve been to Dartmoor, Wales, Scotland, France and spent a summer around Europe all with the club. I have made some of the best friends I have from the club and got some of the best stories to tell. “This one time in Munich….” I have improved so much in the space of a few years and nothing will beat the feeling of nerves before getting on a new river, the excitement of going down an cracking rapid or the feeling of relief/satisfaction of getting down an awesome river!

  22. What made you sign up to the club?

The freshers trips were great fun and all of the members in the club seemed like really good guys and it was a fantastic opportunity to try something different. The trips seemed like good fun ,it was one of the cheapest AU clubs to going and they had their own BUS! There was also a really hot second year which aided in my decision to join the club

  23. How much of a social scene is/was there?

Massive social scene….. socials every week, casual beers with mates, impromptu trips to the beach and Dartmoor. We are all like minded people in the club and so mostly its just a good bunch of people having a good time together whenever we can! Although it’s generally best to ignore the opinions of Robert Chase and accept that Matt Murray will more than likely be a mess most of the time!

  24. Will you be joining the club this year? Why/Why not?

Unfortunately for the first time in 4 years I won’t be at university so can’t join but I’m sure you haven’t lost me quite yet. Ex-members, Polzeath, Christmas dinner….I’ll be there, or anytime I just feel like coming to exe for some paddling and good company!
